A date has been set for the retrial of a Nottinghamshire man accused of murdering his 71-year-old neighbour.

Peter Smith, 46, of West Hill, Skegby was jailed for life at Nottingham Crown Court in 2008 for the murder of Hilda Owen in Skegby in 2007.

The conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal last month after judges cast doubt on the reliability of fingerprint evidence used to convict him.

Mr Smith has been remanded in custody until his trial starts on 15 November.

After his first trial he was handed a life sentence and told he would serve at least 30 years in jail.

Mrs Owen was hit 29 times over the head with a claw-hammer and screwdriver at her home in March 2007.
