Police warning over diesel thefts in Mansfield

Police have warned the public to be vigilant and secure their fuel tanks following a spate of diesel theft in Nottinghamshire.

Since the beginning of June there have been 17 instances where vehicles, many of them vans, were targeted.

Police said thieves forced open fuel caps before siphoning off quantities of diesel.

Insp Mark Webster is linking the spate of thefts to the rising price of diesel.

He said: "With the credit crunch, we have seen fuel prices increase significantly.

"Unfortunately we find thieves will also look to take advantage by using other people's fuel for their own measure, often to commit other crime, or they will sell it on.

"We need residents to be vigilant and take care when parking their vehicles."
