A man has admitted to the murder of a 31-year-old woman in a Nottinghamshire town.

Denise Skilbeck, originally from Oxfordshire, was found dead at a house in The Wharf area of Newark on 16 March.

A post-mortem examination found she died from a head injury.

Gary Spalding, 34, of The Wharf, Newark, pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court and was remanded in custody until his sentencing on 9 September.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating contact between Nottinghamshire Police and Ms Skilbeck prior to her being found dead at her home.

Police had had contact with Ms Skilbeck for three years relating to "a number of domestic incidents" before she died, the police watchdog said.

Miss Skilbeck's family released a statement which said: "She was a very loving, very funny daughter, sister and aunt and she was incredibly community spirited, helping people outside of work as well as in.

"Her loss is being felt not only at home but among the hundreds of people she has touched during her short life. She will be missed tremendously."
