Manton community centre damaged in arson attack

A Nottinghamshire community centre may have to be demolished after it was targeted in an arson attack.

Engineers are inspecting the centre in Manton, near Worksop, after two wheelie bins were set alight and pushed against a door, early on Sunday.

A1 Housing, which runs the facility, said it was a "crucial" part of the community, especially the elderly.

Police have appealed for information on a motorcyclist heard leaving the area shortly before the fire began.

A1 Housing managing director, Bernard Coleman, said the centre had been "devastated", losing the toilets, kitchen, boiler room and a meeting room.

"This is a lifeline for many of the elderly here, it is a hub for their activities and for some it is the only place they meet other people at the community centre," he said.

"It is a shame some people do not have such a feeling for community well being."
