Girl, 7, found after major police search in Nottingham

Police have found a girl who sparked a helicopter search after she was spotted alone on a Nottingham street.

A passer-by contacted officers when she saw a girl thought to be aged five or six years old, on Coppice Road, Arnold, at about 20:45 BST on Tuesday.

As a result of the investigation, a seven-year-old girl has been identified and confirmed she spoke to the woman.

It is thought she returned home immediately and was only away from home for a few minutes, police said.

The search has now been called off.

'Good intent'

Ch Insp Paul Murphy said: "We are satisfied that this is the same girl who was seen by a member of the public last night.

"This incident was reported with good intent and we responded appropriately.

"Any young child is potentially vulnerable and I would like to reassure the public that we treat such reports extremely seriously and would deploy as many officers and resources as possible to locate the child."

Officers conducted house-to-house inquiries, contacted local schools and examined CCTV footage as part of the investigation.
