Mansfield doctor banned over failed medical checks

A doctor who failed to carry out checks on patients with learning difficulties, and falsified records, has been banned from practising for nine months.

The General Medical Council suspended Dr Hans Mayer at a fitness to practise panel hearing on Thursday.

The panel found that Dr Mayer's failure to carry out annual medical checks on patients at Dovecote Residential Home in Mansfield put people at risk.

Dr Mayer has 28 days to appeal against the ban.

The panel heard how Dr Mayer failed to carry out annual health checks on residential patients with learning difficulties on 5 and 11 January 2010.

He entered blood pressure readings, pulse rates and respiratory rates onto patients' charts when none of the tests had been carried out.

The panel heard how Dr Mayer had an "unblemished" career in Germany and the UK, going back 30 years, and that he was under "professional and personal pressure at the time of the incident".
