Problem alleyway in Eastwood closed by council

An alleyway in a Nottinghamshire town has been closed off after residents complained about anti-social behaviour.

Problems including drug-dealing, vandalism, litter and noise have been reported in the alley between Church Street and Malthouse Way in Eastwood.

Broxtowe Borough Council decided on the move after increased police patrols and new CCTV cameras failed to improve the situation.

The authority said the decision had the full support of residents.

It worked with Nottinghamshire County Council and the police to set up the gating order.

Mick Murphy, the county council's cabinet member for community safety, said: "The local residents have put up with a lot of disruptive behaviour and we have been working closely with them to come up with a solution.

"We will not stand for anti-social behaviour and will close affected alleyways when this is the most appropriate way of combating the problem."

The new gates can be opened for access by emergency services and the move will be reviewed later in the year.
