Drivers have faced major delays after part of the M1 was closed following a crash between two lorries and a car.

The crash happened near junction 25 - the A52 turnoff for Nottingham - at about midday.

One lorry driver has been taken to the Queen's Medical Centre with serious injuries. The two other drivers are thought to have minor injuries.

The northbound carriageway was closed until early evening and congestion affected Nottingham and Derby.

At their peak, tailbacks on the motorway stretched back to junction 23, the A42 turn-off in the south and to junction 27 in the north, with delays of more than two hours.

All lanes of the southbound carriageway were re-opened by 17:00 BST.
