More than 1,000 children wanting to join Scout or Guide groups in Oxfordshire are unable to because of a shortage of leaders.

Many of the children on the waiting list will be too old to join the groups by the time a space becomes available.

Almost 800 boys are waiting to join Oxfordshire Scout districts and there are about 600 girls wanting to join the county's Guide groups.

Girlguiding UK said "It's very much a case of attracting new volunteers."

Leader of 33rd Oxford Sea Scouts, Rebecca Ebdon, said: "It's enormously good fun, people should volunteer just because they'll get so much out of it."

Ms Ebdon, who works as a solicitor, added: "I think that there is a real problem getting volunteers these days because people don't feel that they are a part of their community.

"It's a real shame that people feel like that and actually if they started getting involved with Scouting they'd really see that they could enjoy themselves within that as much as they can with the other things that they do with their free time."
