International Space Innovation Centre opens in Harwell

A new £40m science centre that will monitor satellites in orbit has opened in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

The International Space Innovation Centre is equipped with screens displaying high resolution images from satellites.

Andy Shaw, head of strategic business management, said it would monitor "the environment and security or disaster response scenarios."

The opening was attended by the Duke of York.

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said the centre would support the work done by the UK Space Agency, which was allocated £10m in the budget.

He added: "The UK space industry is worth an estimated £7.5bn, and to continue this success businesses need the right environment for sustainable growth and innovation."

University academics will also work at the new site in the development of space technology.
