Head of Oxford Sweet Memories Club becomes MBE

An Oxfordshire woman who set up a club for pensioners has been appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Christine Burden has run the Sweet Memories Senior Citizens' Club in Oxford for 10 years on a voluntary basis.

The club began with 10 members but has since grown to support over 300 pensioners.

Mrs Burden was recognised for services to older people in Oxford.

Romy Briant was also appointed MBE for services to the prevention of domestic violence in Oxfordshire.

Those who have become CBE include the chief executive of Oxfordshire County Council, Joanna Simons, for services to local government.

Bob Harris, the former BBC Radio Oxford presenter, has been appointed OBE for services to music broadcasting.

The Abingdon-based DJ also presented The Old Grey Whistle Test and currently works for BBC Radio 2.
