Oxfordshire nursing home evacuated after fire

Elderly people were led to safety after a fire broke out in an Oxfordshire nursing home.

The blaze started around 0500 BST after a fault in an extractor fan in one of the flats at The Old Prebendal, in Shipton-under-Wychwood.

Residents were safely moved out and three fire crews confined the heavy smoke damage to a lounge and bathroom.

Firefighters praised staff for "prompt professional action" to ensure a quick evacuation.

Watch manger Steve Holland said: '"The smoke from this fire could have endangered a lot of people had they not responded to the alarm and evacuated their rooms."
