Wallingford Street is to be closed to rectify initial repairs

An Oxfordshire road that was closed for nearly a month is having to be shut again to rectify initial repairs.

Local traders said work on Wallingford Street in Wantage last September cost them thousands of pounds in lost trade.

Newsmarket manager, Mike Brown, said: "It's a bit of a kick in the teeth, a year after it's meant to be done and they are closing it again."

The county council blamed material used by a sub-contractor and said taxpayers would not have to pay for the repairs.

A spokesman added: "This work was initially planned to commence on Thursday, 29 September, with a road closure in place for up to three days.

"However, having spoken to local traders, it was agreed to rearrange the work to be carried out starting on a Monday, to remove the risk of disruption running into a Saturday.

"Traders will be informed in advance of which Monday this will be."
