Police probe three Oxfordshire distraction burglaries

Three homes were targeted in a series of what police described as "despicable" distraction burglaries within an hour of each other in Oxfordshire.

The incidents happened on Tuesday evening in Bicester, Botley and Witney between 18:30 GMT and 19:30 GMT.

A man gained entry to one of the homes on Woodstock Road, Witney, by claiming he was a police officer. A wallet was later discovered missing.

Police appealed for witnesses.

The attempted burglaries on Bernwood Road, Bicester, and Eynsham Road, Botley, involved men posing as utilities employees. They are described as having Irish accents.

The two men involved in the incidents in Witney and Botley are thought to be aged between 30 and 50.

Ch Insp Colin Paine said: "These are despicable crimes carried out by people who target the elderly and vulnerable by posing as people they should be able to trust."
