Police station to close in Wantage and new HQ built

Wantage police station in Oxfordshire is to close while its officers will move to new premises.

Thames Valley Police is applying for planning permission to build a base at Grove Technology Park, which is due for completion in November 2012.

The town's front counter service is to move to a refurbished garage next to the town's library in Stirlings Road.

Local area commander Supt Rob Povey said the current 1960s building no longer met the needs of a modern force.

He said: "I would like to reassure Wantage residents that there will be no reduction in the level of policing as a result of the move.

"Our emergency response officers will remain on patrol 24-hours a day across the area and the neighbourhood team will continue to operate as normal," he said.

The police station and magistrates' court, which has already closed, are expected to be put up for sale in 2012.
