Christmas rail disruption warning in Oxfordshire

Train passengers are being warned of severe disruption over Christmas while work is carried out in Oxfordshire.

Network Rail will be carrying out a £5.5m project to replace 10 sets of points on the line between Didcot Parkway and Oxford.

It will mean a bus service will replace all trains between the stations from 27 December to 2 January 2012.

Network Rail said replacing the points will lead to more reliable and smoother journeys in the long-run.

A spokesman said Christmas was chosen as it would cause "minimal overall disruption".

He added: "The points have a lot of wear and we need to replace them.

"These things are planned out but obviously sometimes things happen you can't legislate against, like the weather, but we've taken an awful lot of advice and put measures in place to stop any overrun."
