Free parking in South Oxfordshire on Saturdays approved

Council car parks in South Oxfordshire will be free to use on Saturday afternoons after councillors voted through the proposals.

It is hoped the move will improve footfall in shopping areas.

The authority admitted the scheme, which will come into force from April, will cost it about £60,000 a year in lost revenue.

It also agreed to halve the price of car park season tickets in Didcot, Goring, Henley, Thame and Wallingford.

Under the plans, parking will be free on Saturdays in all council car parks from either 14:00 or 15:00 depending on the site.

A spokesman said the initiatives will reward people who work in the district's suburban centres and encourage people to shop locally.

The council's cabinet approved both plans at a meeting on Monday night and they will now form part of the authority's 2012/13 budget.
