A34 shut as police chase attempted murder suspects

The A34 in Oxfordshire was shut on Wednesday night while police chased and captured two men wanted for an attempted murder in Ireland.

Thames Valley Police said their car was recognised by Automatic Vehicle Registration Cameras.

The men were subject to a European arrest warrant.

The road north of Oxford was closed to allow armed response officers to pursue the suspects and arrest them after they fled from their vehicle.

The pursuit lasted 10-15 minutes, police said.

Traffic police and the force helicopter from Warwickshire were also involved.

The two men are now in custody at a Thames Valley Police station awaiting deportation.

Motorists said traffic on the A34 was at a standstill for more than an hour.

Some drivers were diverted off the road at turning for Islip.
