An Oxfordshire town is being formally twinned with a Slovenian lakeside resort with similar rowing connections.

Dignitaries from Bled are visiting Henley-on-Thames, home to the annual royal regatta, to encourage tourism and educational links.

Team GB Olympic gold medallist Anna Watkins, who has trained on Lake Bled, described it as "wonderful for rowing".

The Slovenian ambassador, tourism officials and civic dignitaries attended a reception in Henley earlier.

Ms Watkins said: "The people there are proud of their rowing history and traditions.

"It's like Henley, even if people aren't rowers, they feel part of the rowing family."

A reciprocal ceremony is due to be held in Slovenia in September.
