A man has been taken to hospital with burns after fire engulfed a property in Wantage, Oxfordshire.

The house on Newbury Street was evacuated after a fire in a second floor bedroom quickly spread into the roof and the floor below.

The man, who is in his 40s, suffered from the effects of smoke inhalation and burns and was taken by ambulance to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

The fire service said the occupants "were lucky to have escaped".

It added: "Firefighters located the fire in a second floor bedroom which was rapidly spreading into the roof space and through the floor into the laundry room below.

"This was quickly brought under control by firefighters [who] remained at the scene along with Thames Valley Police through Saturday to conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire."
