An Oxfordshire country show that attracts thousands of people has been cancelled because of the wet weather.

It is the first time Banbury Town Council has cancelled its Banbury and District Show, which was scheduled for Sunday in Spiceball Park.

Organisers have safety concerns because rain has softened the ground and wet weather is forecast.

Pig racing and falconry were among the attractions planned at the event, which 15,000 people enjoyed last year.

This would have been the show's sixth year.

Chairman of the show committee Colin Clarke said: "The welfare of show visitors and participants is paramount and underfoot conditions in the park are poor after prolonged rain earlier this week and last week.

"Following regular site visits by the council's health and safety officer, it has been decided that the ground at Spiceball Park poses serious problems for those participating."
