Mystery surrounds the death of a man who was killed in a fire in a public toilet block in Oxfordshire.

Jonathan Martin Mills, 49, from Oxford, died in the blaze on Southampton Street, Faringdon, on Monday afternoon.

Police said members of the public were reported as having tried in vain to free Mr Mills from the burning toilet block, and officers are keen to speak to them and any other witnesses.

Post-mortem tests proved inconclusive and the death remains unexplained.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the fire at 13:55 GMT, but Mr Mills, of Netherwoods Road, Risinghurst, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Det Ch Insp Kevin Brown of Thames Valley Police said the force was carrying out a "thorough" investigation.

He said police were looking for anyone who saw a white man wearing a light green and grey jacket and dark trousers in the vicinity of Southampton Street between 10:00 and 14:00.

The detective added: "Officers continue to carry out house-to-house inquiries... I would like to once again thank local residents for their assistance and patience."
