Two police officers have been injured while guarding the scene of a fatal crash on a main road in Oxford.

A woman, in her 20s, was run over and killed by a grey Toyota Avensis late on Friday as she walked along the A40 Northern Bypass.

The officers were protecting the scene for investigators when another car hit their marked police car in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Both were taken to hospital. One needed surgery for a serious leg injury.

Their marked Vauxhall Astra was hit by a blue Toyota Auris, driven by a woman in her late 20s, on the westbound carriageway. She suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Avensis, who police said had been heading towards the Cutteslowe roundabout, was uninjured.
