Hundreds back Shrewsbury beer garden bid

Hundreds of regulars at a Shropshire pub have backed a petition calling for its beer garden to stay open late.

About 400 people have signed the petition calling for The Nags Head, at Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury, to open until midnight from Monday to Friday and to 0100 BST on Fridays and Saturdays.

Landlord Russell Preece gave the petition to Shropshire Council before a licensing committee meeting next week.

The council said it had received two complaints about late-night noise.

Facebook campaign

However, Mr Preece said he had run the the pub for 27 years and there had never been any complaints.

He said: "There's nowhere else to go at that time around here if you don't want to go to a night club and people enjoy sitting outside and some want to smoke.

"I also get a lot of people coming in here after they have finished work in restaurants. It's a popular place."

He said pub regulars were also backing a campaign on Facebook calling for later opening hours for the pub garden.
