Telford fire-damaged supermarket to be redeveloped

A project to redevelop a fire-damaged shopping centre in Telford has been approved by councillors.

The Malinslee Local Centre scheme will include a supermarket, play facilities, and homes.

Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet approved the proposed redevelopment of the centre on Tuesday with detailed plans to be submitted later.

The scheme has been brought forward after the centre's supermarket was destroyed by fire in May 2010.

It follows on from a number of investments already made in Malinslee including the opening of Old Park Primary School and the Stepping Stones Centre.

Councillor Eric Carter, cabinet member for housing and regeneration, said the council was working to regenerate a number of areas.

He said: "Malinslee is similar to some other places in Telford in that its original design was somewhat flawed and it is now looking a bit tired and is badly in need of positive investment.

"This situation has only been exacerbated by the fire. We are keen to help lift people's aspirations. Investment in new facilities is one of the best ways of doing this."
