Royal Irish Regiment soldiers in Shrewsbury parade

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment will march through the streets of Shrewsbury to mark their return from Afghanistan.

It is expected about 300 soldiers and officers returning from a six-month tour of duty will take part.

Commanding officer, Lt Col Colin Weir, said: "The parade is a fitting finale to what has been a gruelling operational deployment."

The parade will take place at 1000 BST on 12 April.

Shropshire Council said they hope hundreds of well wishers will line the streets.

Council chairman Malcolm Pate said: "I think it's extremely important that the people of Shropshire turn out in good numbers to offer their support, and I'm sure the parade will be a wonderful and poignant occasion for all concerned."
