Seven arson attacks on cars in Oswestry

Police are looking for a gang of youths believed to be responsible for arson attacks on seven cars in Oswestry overnight.

The first incident happened at around 0315 BST when a car was set alight in Middleton Road.

Within half an hour police received reports of people trying to set fire to vehicles in Oak Street car park.

Three further incidents of criminal damage and a burglary are being linked.

Some of the cars were severely damaged and others suffered minor damage from scorching.

Other vehicles in the Caer Road, Swan Lane, Ash Road, Crestwood Court and Prince Street area were damaged by people running over the bonnets.

Serious criminal activity

A burglary at the Gatacre Pavilion is also being linked to the arson attacks.

Det Ch Insp Alan Edwards said: "This is a serious sequence of criminal activity. We have launched an investigation working with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service."

He also appealed for help in tracking down the suspects.

"We believe a group of four or five youths who were seen in the area at the time may be responsible," he said.

He asked anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in the Oak Street area between 0300 BST and 0400 BST to contact the police at Oswestry.
