Asda supermarket roof lead is stolen in Shrewsbury

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of stealing lead from the roof of an Asda supermarket in Shrewsbury.

West Mercia Police received a call from a member of staff at the store in Old Potts Way, at just before 0030 BST, who had spotted two men on the roof.

A force spokeswoman said officers arrested two men who were found in a white Ford Escort van in the nearby Netto car park on Abbey Foregate.

She said the men, aged 22 and 23, remained in custody.

Quantities of lead were recovered from two locations nearby and the vehicle was seized for examination she said.

'Suspicious activity'

Det Ch Insp Alan Edwards said: "Officers were able to respond quickly on receiving information and as a result, two men were apprehended on suspicion of theft.

"This incident illustrates how early information can bring positive results.

"We depend on members of the public relaying information about suspicious activity to us.

"In particular, if people are spotted on buildings and it seems odd, then don't turn a blind eye. Tell us so we can check."
