Shrewsbury mill site plans suffer blow

A bid for £12.4m of lottery money to help transform a historical former mill site in Shropshire has failed.

Ditherington Flax Mill is believed to have been the world's first iron-framed building when it was built in 1797.

The site would become shops, homes and offices under £18.8m plans, but an application for £12.4m of that from the Heritage Lottery Fund was rejected.

Shropshire Council said other sources of funding were being explored to ensure current plans could go ahead.
