A teenager from Shropshire has drowned off the southern coast of Spain.

Emergency crews in Huelva, west of Seville, were called on Sunday evening to search for Ethan Chant, 18, a former pupil of Thomas Adams School in Wem.

A helicopter, four boats and police divers were sent out but his body was found near a beach in Punta Umbria on Tuesday.

The head teacher at his school said Ethan was popular and well respected by his peers and teachers.

'Difficult time'

In a statement, a spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Huelva, Spain.

"Next of kin have been informed.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."

In a statement, head teacher Neil Hemming, said: "Ethan played a positive role in school life and outside the classroom was particularly keen on the army cadets in which he attained awards for responsibility and leadership.

"He will be fondly remembered as a very popular member of the school community who was well respected by his peers and staff alike.
