Man in 70s arrested for attempted murder in Shropshire

A man in his 70s has been arrested for attempted murder after a woman suffered "serious" stab wounds in Shropshire.

Police cordoned off an area in Sandford Avenue, in Church Stretton, after an incident at about 1445 BST on Thursday.

A spokesman said the woman, who is in her 60s, is in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with serious neck, face and shoulder injuries.

The man is in Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital being treated for neck injuries.

The spokesman described their condition as "stable".

'Serious incident'

He said no-one else was injured and police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

He added they believe no-one else was involved and the two casualties were known to each other.

Det Ch Insp Alan Edwards said: "This is clearly a serious incident and we are in the process of investigating all the circumstances.

"It is important anyone who witnessed what happened contacts Ludlow or Shrewsbury police stations.

"A number of witnesses have already been spoken but there may be others who have not yet contacted us."
