Shropshire A49 to get extra mobile speed camera sites

Speed enforcement is to be increased along a main road through Shropshire in a bid to reduce collisions.

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is launching five new mobile speed camera sites on the A49.

The sites will be along the entire route in the county in a bid to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety.

They will be located at Leebotwood, Church Stretton - where there will be two sites, Upper Battlefield and Hadnall.

There is currently just one site, at Dorrington.

The Safer Roads Partnership said that in the last three years there had been 162 collisions along the road in Shropshire.

Of these, 39 were crashes where someone was killed or seriously injured. There were seven fatalities.

'Wider approach'

Speed camera warning signs will be located at regular intervals along the A49 to inform all road users that speed enforcement is active along the route.

Katy Jenkins, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia, said: "The 'route approach' we are taking to speed enforcement along the A49 is a forward-looking initiative designed to encourage speed limit compliance along the entirety of the road.

"Motorists using excessive speed compromise the safety of other road users.

"The strengthening of the enforcement activity will encourage motorists to adopt less risky and more considerate driving behaviours."

The enforcement is being supported by the Highways Agency, which manages the route, and Shropshire Council.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for road safety, said: "Enforcing speed limits is an important part of a wider approach to protecting the safety of all road users.

"We are committed to working with our partners to improve road safety and this is one of a range of initiatives, alongside education, training, and improving roads, which are all helping to make the county's roads safer."
