Cheswardine farm fire: Sixty pigs die

An investigation has begun into a fire in which 60 pigs died in a building at a Shropshire farm.

The animals were all sows who were about to give birth or had young litters.

Fire crews were praised for saving all the other animals in adjoining sheds of the farm at Westcott Lane, Goldstone near Cheswardine.

Andy Griffiths, the station manager at Wellington, said the fire was well developed before it was discovered.

He said the firefighters had done a good job.

"The good work of crews from Market Drayton, Newport and Prees meant we were able to save the remainder of the livestock in the other buildings on the farm."

He said a fire investigation was taking place but there was nothing to suggest there was anything suspicious about the circumstances of the fire.
