A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of threats to kill after reports a man was seen waving a gun out of a flat in Shrewsbury town centre.

Officers were called at about 03:30 BST by a member of the public who claimed to have spotted a man waving a firearm out of a window in Castle Street.

A negotiator was sent to the scene with police who sealed off the road.

Early attempts to contact the occupant failed but a man was arrested outside at 07:15 BST and no-one was hurt.

West Mercia Police said officers had been preparing to force entry to the flat but were stood down following the "peaceful" arrest.

Neighbours were asked to stay inside as a safety precaution but this restriction was lifted at about 07:30 BST when the Castle Street cordon was removed.

A 29-year-old man remains in custody at Malinsgate Police Station and no firearm has been found.
