Ifton Heath Primary School closure is approved

Plans to close a Shropshire primary school have been approved.

A special cabinet meeting of Shropshire Council decided unanimously to go ahead with the closure of Ifton Heath Primary School at St Martins in 2012.

It will merge with nearby Rhyn Park Secondary School to form an all-through school.

The head teacher of Ifton Heath, Nicola Bradley, said the school governors would carry on with an application to become an academy.

She said the facilities for primary children at Rhyn Park were not as good. "We've got fantastic spaces around us and in school and what we are being offered in no way compares with what we have here," she said.

Nigel Keats, the acting head teacher at Rhyn Park, said he supported the move to an all-through school.

"It's about creating the best educational provision that's sustainable in St Martins and the surrounding area," he said.

Shropshire Council has already confirmed the closure of Barrow, Shawbury, Maesbury and Hopton Wafers primary schools and Wakeman Secondary School, Shrewsbury.
