EDL demo costs Telford and Wrekin Council £22,000

Rallies by the English Defence League (EDL) and their opponents in the Telford and Wrekin area last month cost the council more than £22,000.

A planned EDL march in Wellington on 13 August was banned by the home secretary but about 400 people went to the town and more than 40 people were arrested.

According to the council, planning and staffing for the day cost £22,507.

The cost of policing the rallies in the Shropshire town was £342,500, West Mercia Police has said.
