Woman dies after being rescued from Telford house fire

A 55-year-old woman has died in a fire at a house in Shropshire.

The blaze, in a terraced house at Glebelands in Donnington, Telford, broke out at 16:15 BST on Wednesday.

The woman was found inside the house with serious injuries and in cardiac arrest. She was confirmed at dead the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

A man in his 30s was treated at the scene for minor burns and smoke inhalation. Police and the fire service are investigating the blaze.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the victim was the sixth person to die in a house fire in the county this year and 2010 - 2011 has the worst record for deaths since the service's records began in 1998, the year it took over from Shropshire County Council.

Head of Fire Prevention, John Das Gupta, asked people to ensure that their homes are protected with smoke alarms.

He also warned of the dangers faced by the vulnerable and elderly through decreased mobility and and a poor sense of smell.
