St Mary's C of E school to move to Shawbury Primary site

A primary school will move across a village in the last part of a school reorganisation plan announced by Shropshire Council.

It said a new St Mary's C of E Primary would be based on the site of the current Shawbury Primary from July.

Earlier in the year the cabinet backed plans to create a single Shawbury school under the governance of St Mary's.

A decision on its location was deferred while a feasibility study took place.

Shawbury Primary will be one of five Shropshire schools to close at the end of the academic year.

Shrewsbury's Wakeman school, the only secondary on the closure list, will shut its doors in 2013, in its 75th anniversary year.

The location of the enlarged St Mary's school was the last detail to be agreed in the council's plans.

It said the closures and federations would save money, while improving educational standards.

A joint strategic committee said the Shawbury Primary site offered the best "opportunity to deliver an ever improving quality of education".

A new head teacher is due to be appointed in the new year, to take on responsibility for the combined school from September.
