Stalin mask and hands casts sold at Shropshire auction

A bronze cast of the death mask of the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin has fetched £3,600 at an auction in Shropshire.

The cast was one of two that was taken by an art dealer who was visiting Moscow in 1990.

One remains in a private collection in London, while this one was put up for auction by an unnamed private collector.

The winning bid for the lot, which included casts of Stalin's right hand and withered left hand, was placed over the telephone by an anonymous bidder.

Richard Westwood-Brookes, from Church Stretton-based auction house Mullock's talks about the mask.
