Free wi-fi sites idea discussed by a Shropshire council

Free wi-fi could be rolled out in parts of Shropshire under proposals being discussed by a local authority.

Telford and Wrekin Council is considering the plan to provide internet access around a number of its buildings.

Under the proposals, one of the first places to get the scheme would be Brookside in Telford.

Councillor Shaun Davies said he hoped the scheme could then be rolled out because the benefits would be "huge".

The cabinet member for environment, co-operative council and partnerships, said: "This is not about putting free internet into peoples' homes, that would cost far too much.

"What we're talking about is making Telford and Wrekin as a borough, eventually, a wi-fi hotspot in itself," he added.

Mr Davies said what they needed to do was make sure that "Telford doesn't lag behind".

"What businesses are saying to me is actually the internet now is just as important as the highway to their business development."
