Metal thieves target power cables in Montford Bridge

More than 1,600m (5,249ft) of live power cables have been stolen in a series of thefts near Shrewsbury.

In the latest incident at about 02:30 GMT on Sunday, thieves used ladders to cut four copper cables from a pylon in Montford Bridge.

West Mercia Police said thieves were targeting pylons and wooden poles standing in isolated fields.

On Thursday 800m (2,625ft) of cable was stolen from a field near The Bridge Pub outside the village of Dorrington.

West Mercia Police said thieves were not only putting their own lives at risk, but also endangering members of the public.

"We want people to contact the police immediately if they see anyone working or tampering on overhead cables," a spokesperson said.
