Bishop's Castle abattoir and Church Stretton butcher's to close

An abattoir in south Shropshire has closed down because it has been unable to keep up with competitors.

Bosses at Daysdrove said the firm had failed and that it was too small to compete with major retailers.

A spokesperson for the company said it was open to offers from buyers for both its Bishop's Castle abattoir and butcher's shop in Church Stretton.

The butcher's shop is still open but the abattoir stopped operating at its Love Lane site on Wednesday.

It is unclear how many people currently work for the company but a spokesman said 20 people were employed at the height of its success.

Daysdrove had been reopened by private investors in 2009.
