Buildwas-to-Much Wenlock road bridge shut for repairs

A Shropshire bridge is closing to traffic for up to two weeks while long-term safety repairs are carried out.

The Buildwas Bridge, that carries the A4169 Buildwas-to-Much Wenlock road over the River Severn, has been shut.

Its expansion joints will be replaced as they are no-longer watertight and the road over the bridge will also be resurfaced.

Shropshire Council said it expects it to re-open to traffic by 25 February.

Pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain able to use the bridge.

The authority said that the second week of closure is a "contingency measure" in case weather delays work.

During the closure, Shropshire Council said that traffic can continue along the B4380 and A458 roads via Leighton, Cressage and Much Wenlock.

Simon Jones, cabinet member responsible for bridge maintenance, said: "This is essential work which needs to be carried out to enable the bridge to continue to function safely in the long term."
