St John Ambulance helps at Whitchurch minor injuries unit

Volunteers from St John Ambulance are providing help at a hospital following a decision to cut the opening times of a minor injury unit.

The unit at Whitchurch hospital has been closed at weekends and evenings because of staff shortages.

Managers said nurses who were running the unit were needed to relieve pressure in the main hospital.

St John Ambulance said its volunteers would cover the bank holiday weekend but there was no plan to extend that.

Glen Curry from the organisation said: "We're not providing exactly the same services that a minor injuries unit would but we can give first aid support while the service is temporarily suspended."
