A body found in the River Severn has been confirmed as Daniel Hodgin, who went missing in Shrewsbury in November.

The 20-year-old, from Madeley, was last seen outside the Buttermarket nightclub in the early hours of 23 November.

His disappearance prompted a search involving hundreds of volunteers.

Mr Hodgin's body was discovered by a search and rescue team downstream, near Cressage, on New Year's Eve. Police said his death was being treated as unexplained.

Det Sgt Rob Mountford, of West Mercia Police, said: "Our thoughts go out to Daniel's family and friends at this very sad time. This is a tragic loss of life, of someone so young."

A Facebook campaign to improve safety along the River Severn in Shrewsbury has so far attracted almost 3,000 "likes" in just over 24 hours.
