More than 700 jobs at two distribution centres in Somerset are to transfer to a new facility in Bristol.

The Co-operative Group says it will close operations at the facilities in Wellington and Bridgwater in favour of the new Bristol centre.

The company says the 731 staff at the two centres will be offered the chance to relocate to Avonmouth.

The new centre will serve Co-operative and Somerfield stores across Bristol and South Wales.

'Hard work'

The Co-operative Group says it hopes the new centre will open, subject to planning permission, in 2012.

Spokesman Mark Leonard said the move "in no way reflected the commitment and hard work" of the staff at the current centres in Somerset.

"We hope as many staff as possible will be able to transfer to Avonmouth once it is operational."

The new Avonmouth depot will also take over operations currently run by Wincanton on behalf of the Co-op at Portbury near Bristol.
