M5 southbound closed at Puriton by serious vehicle fire

The M5 has been closed southbound near Puriton in Somerset due to "a serious vehicle fire".

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said officers were diverting traffic, following the incident at junction 23, near Bridgwater.

He said two cars had been on fire in lane two of the carriageway and firefighters were in attendance.

He advised motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes. The northbound carriageway is unaffected.

The spokesman said police were still trying to establish what had happened.
