Fourth arrest in Somerton Town Council fraud inquiry

A fourth man has been arrested as part of police investigations into the finances of a Somerset council.

Somerton Town Council's former vice chairman, Anthony Canvin, was among three men, all aged 62, who were arrested earlier this month.

Avon and Somerset Police said the fourth man, aged 68, was arrested on suspicion of fraud on Monday.

A police spokesman said all four men were on police bail pending further inquiries.

"The investigation remains ongoing and it would be inappropriate to comment in any further detail at this stage," he said.

The Audit Commission confirmed previously that it had been approached by a member of the public over proceedings at Somerton Town Council earlier this year.

The commission instructed accountancy firm Moore Stephens to investigate.

Mr Canvin was among 12 councillors who resigned from the town council in October last year, blaming abuse from a local blogger.

He remains in his role as an independent councillor at South Somerset District Council.
