Charity Relate shuts all of it centres in Somerset

Relationship charity Relate is closing all of its branches in Somerset due to financial problems.

Just under 30 staff have been made redundant from Bridgwater, Taunton, Wells and Yeovil, but nine people have been transferred to another charity.

Relate's head office is in the process of talking to centres in neighbouring counties to try to ensure that services are able to continue across Somerset.

A meeting with creditors has been arranged for 18 April.

Sarah Caulkin, from Relate, said: "It is important to be clear that this does not mean that the national Relate charity will close or that it is at risk of closure.

"Relate centres across the country operate under a federated charity structure, which means that each centre is responsible for its own financial management under its own board of trustees.

"Relate Somerset had clearly been experiencing difficulties and at a national level, we have been working with the local centre to try and avoid the centre shutting down, but sadly this was not possible and closure was the only option."

The charity said anyone who is having relationship difficulties can get free online support via their website or can get free telephone counselling.
