A four-year-old boy who was hit by a school bus in Somerset has been declared "clinically dead", police have said.

Alfie Jones was walking home with one of his parents from Huish Episcopi Primary School in Langport on Tuesday when he was struck by the bus.

A man has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The county council said earlier the boy had died but it later emerged that he was on a life-support machine.

The incident happened in Wincanton Road. The road was closed for several hours.

The school bus was taking children home from nearby Huish Episcopi Academy.

A number of support agencies are working within the school to help pupils and staff.

The school issued a statement sending its support to the family.
